Engineering and Construction through Collaborative Play

Funded Mar 27, 2018

I appreciate your generosity for allowing my students to bring our construction theme to life in the classroom! The children greatly enjoyed collaborating on their building projects and exploring the new materials. The woodworking projects were a favorite activity. The children carefully designed and created trains, houses, tables and more.

Additionally, students took on the roles of architects, builders, engineers and construction workers through their daily peer interactions. They designed blueprints, engaged with the dramatic play tool set provided and learned how to designate and carry out specific tasks as a group. These new classroom materials helped to generate discussions, problem-solving and teamwork.

Overall, the children directed and developed hands on building and interactive experiences through the supplies gained. These materials---woodworking kits, large hollow blocks, tools, and building supplies---supported a tangible understanding of the construction process while supporting language and literacy, math, science, social studies, and the arts. We look forward to utilizing our workbench in the block center this school year. Thank you!”

With gratitude,

Ms. Jessica
