Our school serves primarily students of color, and while we do read books about people of color we read relatively few that are written by people of color about living in America in our current day and age. Currently, the curriculum we use includes no texts written about or by indigenous Americans, we hope to remedy that gap by reading "The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian," by Sherman Alexie. Because much "The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian" takes place in the familiarity of school, narrated by a protagonist who looks like our students giving our students the chance to see themselves reflected in the text. With its strong narrative, use of figurative language, and powerful themes this book would be an asset in moving our students forward on a number of necessary standards while maintaining student-interest in the novel. Beyond that, this book opens a window for our students to learn more about the real indigenous peoples of today who are often pidgeon-holed in to stereotypes by mainstream media, or even worse, forgotten. For our students of color, seeing themselves in text, reading books by authors of color, and seeing their stories acknowledged and celebrated is important. Sherman Alexie's novel gives students recognition, pride, a connection to literature, at the same time pushing forward our academic goals and objectives.
