Students will work with counselors during advisory period where they will learn social/emotional skills through therapeutic art projects. This curriculum was created from scientific studies that have proven to help students build healthy relationships with first themselves, then with others; which in turn, will help them succeed academically. Art has been used through the decades to help students get past traumas they have experienced that has hindered them from moving forward to become functional youth. For example, we have done a relaxation art therapy project where students close their eyes while I talk them into relaxation. Sitting on the desks in front of them are canvas, paints, brushes and water containers. After the talk is complete the students are then told to paint what they envisioned during the relaxation talk. A survey was given before and after the project. The results showed that students were better able to concentrate in class and complete work that was difficult to understand before the project.
