Our active students need a variety of areas to work in throughout the day. Working all day in our desks proves to be ineffective, as our students' work best when movement is included. This carpet will provide them with an alternative learning area, where they can take a break, work with a partner or small group, or work independently on a S.T.E.A.M. activity. This carpet will also serve as an instrumental tool for our morning meetings. Our students sit on the carpet with the adults in the classroom every morning. During these meetings, we share important information with each other, build community, play collaborative games, learn valuable social skills, and preview expectations and activities for the day. It is our students' and teachers' favorite part of the day. Having a set space for this meeting is so important. In our new carpet area, we will have bean bags, weighted blankets, fidgets, and other tools to regulate our bodies and brains. This will be an area our students can access when they become dysregulated. Teaching students how to appropriately access a break when they become overwhelmed is an ongoing skill we work on. Having an area where they can regulate independently is a critical part of this teaching. We need and appreciate your support to provide our students with an optimal learning environment. Thank you!
