Using "Batman: Year One" my students will have an an engaging experience reading a story of Batman's first year as the Dark Knight. Our class will begin this project by defining the warrior, bully, and wimp character types that will be seen in this story. We will then begin reading the graphic novel together using guided reading questions to drive our conversations aimed at inferring, predicting, and connecting with the characters and story. Students will then answer questions that require students to summarize and practice using evidence to support reasoning. Through this graphic novel my students will experience another medium to develop and practice their reading skills. This will culminate in a final project to create a newspaper report using details and characters from the story. In the end, I hope my students enjoy engaging with this story and thus inspire them to pursue further reading on their own. Pop-culture is no longer reserved for Saturday morning cartoons.
