My students started the year openly admitting they were not readers With the small classroom library I have started to develop and the help of our school librarian, I began matching the right book with the right student. Realizing that when students see themselves in books they are more eager to read and become involved in the narrative. Now, in February, I have self-proclaimed readers. I have chosen YA novels that address topics of race, gender, poverty, sexuality, - novels I know my students will be able to relate too and will continue building a class and school culture of readers.
