Kids are constantly moving. They wiggle and shift and dance and shake without even trying and, often, without even realizing it! This movement is good for them. Movement breaks help kids focus and channel the immense amount of energy trapped in their small bodies. When they are focused, they learn better. The reality is that the design of most classrooms, where children are seated in desks and chairs, is not always the best option for my students to grow and be the best learners possible. I regularly see students in classrooms tucking their feet up, standing at their desks, sitting backward and sideways in chairs, and accommodating their need for flexibility in a rigid and structured environment as best they can. Clearly, they need other options. Therefore, I am giving my students the opportunity to choose a place in the classroom to work where they feel they can learn best.
Second graders are still learning what it takes to focus both their mind and body in order to learn; more flexible seating options will allow them a productive way to move and focus their energy while helping to eliminate the behavior issues that can arise when students don't have the necessary outlets. Most students simply do not learn best in a hard desk or chair, and they need alternative options to help them stay engaged and learn to their fullest potential. Wiggle cushions, wobbles stools, and yoga balls will allow my students to have the flexibility to choose the type of seat that will allow them to focus on their education and adjust their position in the classroom to cater to their own learning preferences. The most important thing is that students get to advocate for the best seating option for them to become more productive and engaged.
