As a teacher of language I sometimes incorporate visual arts into writing. What better tool to capture imagery than being outdoor? Sadly our space is no longer suitable as our benches are broken. Research shows that there is a definite link between nature and knowledge. We know what the research say but lack the resources to purchase new tables and benches. Providing this space will foster scientific inquiry, environmental stewardship and a space that engenders pride. Some of these learners are aesthetic and need an environment beyond four walls. Taking these students beyond the bricks at least once per week will provide a safe and suitable space for project based learning.
The three picnic tables with a capacity of eight will accommodate 24 students (a class) for at least one period each day. The umbrellas will provide shade from harsh sunlight and the bases will firmly secure and protect umbrellas. The occasional outdoors will calm the anxiety some of these students deal with from external social or family challenges.
By donating to this windowless classroom space you will aid in the physiological recovery of students who grapple with social and mental issues and ultimately improve their academic achievement. Students will complement this project by building wishing wells from recycled tires and placing plants around the triangular area.
