Writing is a medium for communication, connection and creativity. It helps young children cultivate emotional growth, develop critical thinking skills and improve school performance. Author's write for an audience; they write to be read. The mentor texts will be used as examples of good writing for students to reference and imitate during their writing time. Students will then write, independently choose a story of their own to publish, and use the various writing tools and different paper to illustrate and finalize their stories before laminating and binding for publishing as an addition to our classroom library. By cultivating this capability in my students, I am giving them the priceless power to share their thoughts and ideas with the world in a meaningful and authentic way. My students need books to use as good examples of the different writing genres. Mentor texts are essential pieces of text for students to return to and reread for many different purposes. According to the National Writing Project, children need texts that can be studied and imitated. Providing students with good examples of writing is vital to encouraging them to take risks and be different writers tomorrow than they are today. It will help them to try out new strategies and formats.  My students need pencils, erasers, glue, crayons, colored pencils, markers, writing paper, and colored paper to express themselves in creative ways. The Department of Education suggests students be provided with various tools to become strong writers and make the writing process more enjoyable. My students need a binding machine, binding coils, white and colored card stock, and laminating pouches to publish and protect their writing. According to Scholar Works, students’ motivation to write will be sustained and writing will be improved. Publishing student work communicates that they are REAL writers and worthy of publication.
