  • Calming Area

    Funded Apr 2, 2024

I would like to thank each and every one of you for your generous donations to my project "Calming Area". The students in the school I service have been able to access all of the engaging and impactful tools from my Calming Area during these past few weeks that school has been in session.

The start of the new school year can provoke anxiety in many students and providing them with a safe space to express and cope with those emotions can make a positive impact. Many of the students who have visited my Calming corner this school year have visited due to experiencing anxiety. They have used tools such as the calm down mazes, flexible seating, SEL books, as well as fidgets to cope. They report being a calmer state after utilizing all of those tools. Thank you for your support of mental health services for our youth.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Rubio

  • Emotionally Ready for School: Taking Care of the Heart!

    Funded Sep 17, 2018

I continue to express my gratitude towards you for your generous donations and the impact that those donations have made on the students that I work with in the counseling capacity. The books and resources have all been used in my counseling sessions to explain various topics. One of the books that has been highly used is "The Memory Box" which is a book about a young girl coping with the loss of a loved one. During this semester I have facilitated a grief/loss group for students who have recently lost a loved one and I used that book during one of the sessions. The students were able to relate to the main character and it gave them an opportunity to share about their own losses. This semester I also coordinated an anti-bullying month. I used several of the anti-bullying books during my bullying prevention classroom presentations. The students were engaged and attentive to the visuals presented to them. My students and I are truly grateful for the positive impact you have made with your donation. May you forever be blessed!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Rubio

I am a school social worker placed at two elementary school sites in need of tools to help the students I service cope with various traumatic events. I provide counseling support in individual, group, and classroom settings. My goal for this year is to create a social emotional library in my office with counseling books and resources that students, staff, and parents will benefit from. These past years I have observed how books have been powerful tools in my counseling sessions. Students feel more comfortable making connections about their situations with book characters and that has built up rapport! Several of my students are visual learners and having visuals in front of them makes the sessions more meaningful to them. The books that I have selected touch upon the the following topics: anger management, divorce/separation, friendships, self-esteem, responsibility, growth mindset, and grief/loss. From these books I will be able to teach students the social emotional skills that they need in order to help them be ready to learn in school! I have also requested the "Cognitive Behavioral Toolbox" which includes a variety of worksheets and activitites for children who have a diagnosis of ADHD, anxiety, conduct disorder, and autism. These worksheets will serve as talking points during counseling sessions and will also be shared with teachers, parents, and staff to create a holistic approach to the child's well being. Additionally, I requested card games such as "Mad Dragon: Anger Control Game" and "Mindfulness Card Games". I am in the process of creating a "Chill Zone"/calm down area in my office so that students who have a hard time managing their emotions can take a break when needed. I plan on having those card games in my "Chill Zone" and use them as a learning tool during play therapy.
