I am a school social worker placed at two elementary school sites in need of tools to help the students I service cope with various traumatic events. I provide counseling support in individual, group, and classroom settings.
My goal for this year is to create a social emotional library in my office with counseling books and resources that students, staff, and parents will benefit from. These past years I have observed how books have been powerful tools in my counseling sessions. Students feel more comfortable making connections about their situations with book characters and that has built up rapport! Several of my students are visual learners and having visuals in front of them makes the sessions more meaningful to them.
The books that I have selected touch upon the the following topics: anger management, divorce/separation, friendships, self-esteem, responsibility, growth mindset, and grief/loss. From these books I will be able to teach students the social emotional skills that they need in order to help them be ready to learn in school!
I have also requested the "Cognitive Behavioral Toolbox" which includes a variety of worksheets and activitites for children who have a diagnosis of ADHD, anxiety, conduct disorder, and autism. These worksheets will serve as talking points during counseling sessions and will also be shared with teachers, parents, and staff to create a holistic approach to the child's well being. Additionally, I requested card games such as "Mad Dragon: Anger Control Game" and "Mindfulness Card Games". I am in the process of creating a "Chill Zone"/calm down area in my office so that students who have a hard time managing their emotions can take a break when needed. I plan on having those card games in my "Chill Zone" and use them as a learning tool during play therapy.
