Students in my school community come from very challenging home lives and are often not given the opportunity to collaborate or socialize with peers in a socially rich environment. The effects of COVID and being distanced from peers have led to a social decline amongst peer groups at school. Students have experienced huge gaps in their social and emotional progress and in how they interact with others. Kindergarteners and 1st graders suffered the most, as their first years of school were at home. They have experienced a mental decline in their social and communication skills. It has also effected the ways students communicate with others due to the current effects of Covid and the residual effects from a lockdown. The use of a lego wall and a 3D printer and the bricks and the filament to go with them will provide my students with the opportunity to work with their peers in a socially distanced and safe environment. It will allow them to collaborate and build with both the printer and the lego wall and would require the groups to work together effectively and safely to express and communicate their ideas and to achieve a common goal. These items would help students meet the following Nevada Academic Content standards: SL.3.5 , SL.3.6 and ES.3.T.1 ES.3.T.2 ES.3.T through communication with peers, collaborative work, and being able to support their mental health through social and interactive activities provided from this project.
