  • Grab a Book and Let’s Share Our Feelings

    Funded Feb 11, 2018

WE have enjoyed using so many of the books and materials that you donated. The children love to use the feelings flashcards to help them identify with what they are feeling or to play a feelings charades. We also love using the Inside out box of mixed emotions books to help us to create a mood meter that we use every time we start a counseling session. All of the books have helped us understand our emotions. The book Feelings Monster has so many cool pop up pictures and it is so interactive that it is a student favorite. The children love to look at this book to help them calm down after a stressful event. They also use the My Moods My Choices flyback often, as they can flip through the pages and find fun ways to reinforce positive actions. Another school favorite is Mighty Mommies and Their Amazing Jobs. We used this book while learning about different careers before our career fair. It was so amazing to have woman represented in so many important careers. We start each small group counseling session and each classroom guidance lesson with a book. Now, we have so many books to choose from as we continue to learn social emotional skills that will help us to be the best we can be!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Damato

As a school counselor, when students come to me angry and crying because of something that happened with a teacher, I can take out the book "When Sophie Gets Angry Really, Really Angry" and we can brainstorm different coping strategies. When a child is having difficulty identifying and expressing their feelings, I take out my favorite book, "Color Monster" and use the amazing illustrations in the book to help students identify their feelings. As I plan my lessons, meet with groups, and see individual students, I find myself reaching for book after book to assist me in teaching my students the valuable skills they need to be happy and healthy members of our society. I plan to use books like "I'm Like You, You're Like Me" to help the children understand and appreciate differences. Books like "It's Hard to Be a Verb" will benefit a group of students who need to work on self-control. The books I've requested will add depth and clarity to lessons about being safe, respectful, responsible and emotionally strong. I am excited to expand my selection of books through this learning library, so I can have more resources to help my students navigate through tricky emotional situations and learn skills that will help them as students, family members, and members of society. Hopefully these books may even help my students navigate the twists and turns of their own story.
