As a school counselor, when students come to me angry and crying because of something that happened with a teacher, I can take out the book "When Sophie Gets Angry Really, Really Angry" and we can brainstorm different coping strategies. When a child is having difficulty identifying and expressing their feelings, I take out my favorite book, "Color Monster" and use the amazing illustrations in the book to help students identify their feelings. As I plan my lessons, meet with groups, and see individual students, I find myself reaching for book after book to assist me in teaching my students the valuable skills they need to be happy and healthy members of our society. I plan to use books like "I'm Like You, You're Like Me" to help the children understand and appreciate differences. Books like "It's Hard to Be a Verb" will benefit a group of students who need to work on self-control. The books I've requested will add depth and clarity to lessons about being safe, respectful, responsible and emotionally strong. I am excited to expand my selection of books through this learning library, so I can have more resources to help my students navigate through tricky emotional situations and learn skills that will help them as students, family members, and members of society. Hopefully these books may even help my students navigate the twists and turns of their own story.
