The students have been studying the way animals interact and adapt within their environment. They are learning about predators and prey, as well as life cycles and how they interact within a particular ecosystem. Since animals are rather difficult to draw, especially for 2nd graders, it is necessary for them to trace a projected image onto their project boards, which has been a bit of a challenge. The document camera will greatly simplify the process and improve the quality of their projects for display, which will also allow the students to feel better about their work. They have seen projects created by similar image projectors around the school, and are anxious to create some of their own. Learning how animals utilize their natural strengths to survive in their habitat by finding food and shelter, protecting their offspring, and avoiding predators helps the students to understand how a particular specie perpetuates itself. This unit is very interesting to the students and allows them to study the way animals live and thrive. Instead of merely liking animals because they are cute, they can appreciate them more by learning about their physical characteristics and adaptations to their environments.
