Our little community in the desert is not very diverse. Our students come from very similar backgrounds, religions, social and socioeconomic class, and education level. Some of them will not see much of life outside of this area. Since we are from such a rural school district, we are limited on funds to purchase class sets of novels. This means that our students are recycling the same stories year after year and are not being introduced to new ideas and perceptions. Novels, such as The Book Thief, give our students the ability to see outside of our small community through the eyes of a child about their age. It is something that they can relate to in a myriad of ways. It is not only important to share with them the struggles and triumphs of those who came before them but to use the tools we have to help the discover who they are.
