  • Climate Change Trade Book Research

    Funded Mar 13, 2022

Thank you so much for your generosity.

Having these books in the classroom is going to increase access to climate change education for 6th Gr students at my school.

The research process begins with immersion research into climate change and students will be using their books to practices research skills and create infographic probenecid to teach others about their climate change subtopics!”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Gordon

  • Climate Change Podcast

    Funded Aug 27, 2019

It is so incredibly generous of each of you to fund this climate change Podcast project. My students and I cannot thank you enough.

Having proper podcasting equipment for this project really ups the ante on expectations and makes students fell important and empowered as they embark on their work.

We cannot wait to share our work with each of you.”

    Mr. Gordon

  • Climate Change Podcasts

    Funded May 14, 2019

The books that we received for this project allowed all students to access complex scientific content at their reading level and to build their knowledge from there. Without your support, many of my students would have been at a disadvantage and would have had difficulty accessing nonfiction texts related to climate change.

The variety of books we received allowed for students to make informed decisions as to which climate change subtopic they wanted to conduct research on and ultimately create a podcast about.

The library is something that we are all proud of and will continue to build upon. Thank you so much for all of your support.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Gordon

  • Hudson River Coffee Table Book

    Funded Mar 27, 2018

Thank you for the books you provided to our classroom. We used the book your provided to teach research skills focusing on how to select texts ranging in difficulty from novice to proficient to expert. Students learned how to build background knowledge quickly this way.

While reading, students taught each other what they read and captured their ideas with effective note-taking strategies based on the structure of the text. Students then created categories from their notes. These categories eventually became pages that they included in the Hudson River Coffee Table Book.

Many of my students have loved looking at the books. They appreciate the fact that they get to read trade book with interactive pictures and captions, as opposed to text books.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Gordon

Our unit on the Hudson River focuses on concepts relating to ecology. In order for my students to build their background knowledge, they need nonfiction texts that cover a variety of these ecological concepts to immerse them in the content. We will start out the unit with immersion reading with these new library books and create teaching tools to demonstrate our new knowledge. From there, we will continue the inquiry cycle and begin specialized research on the Hudson River ecosystem. The end product for the project will be a coffee table book about the Hudson River ecosystem. Each group in the class specializes in a specific organism and creates a chapter for the book that looks at how their organism has been impacted by the invasion of the zebra mussel.
