• Sew What? New Sewing Machine Needed for Costume Design Class

  Thank you so much for the generous donations. I am so happy to share that the new sewing machine has a nice cozy home in our classroom. We just acquired a new table for it and had an extra case to keep it safe. We named it Homer, after Homer Simpson (since all of our machines are named after characters from The Simpsons.) The new machine is very user friendly for beginners and durable, I would love to acquire another one in the same model. Thank you for supporting my classroom so we can continue to learn these new skills on the sewing machines.”

• New Hard Case for Sewing Machine

  Thank you so much for your generous donation. I rely on the support of Donors Choose to help build my costume program at my school. We are still a new program, and with new supplies needed all the time, there is much to purchase and little school funding. Thank you for funding our recent project of hard cases to keep our sewing machines safe. Our costume room is shared with the entire theater department, so rehearsals take place in that room, as well as all the theater studio classes. With so many students near our delicate machines, we want to ensure they remain safe when our class is not in session. As a class, we just finished making the costumes for our winter play, The Importance of Being Earnest. We had so much fun making them and working as the costume crew for the show. Thank you for helping to build our program with your generosity. We appreciate you.”

  Thank you so much for donating to my classroom for the new sewing machine. We name all of our sewing machines after characters from The Simpsons. And because we received the sewing machine during the holiday season, naturally we named the newest addition to our classroom Snowball, after the cat. Students were able to learn how to hem and helped make costumes for our play production of "The Importance of Being Earnest." We had so much fun making the costumes and working as the costume crew during the run of the show. Thankful for helping to grow our costuming program in our school with your generosity.”

  You would not believe how much my students enjoy learning how to sew. In just 5 weeks, they have all learned the three basic sewing stitches, all the basic tools in a sewing kit, and learned how to sew appliques together, and design and create original plushie dolls. I cannot believe how fast they all learn. They are so eager to learn more and next week we will start applying our sewing skills to actual costuming skills.

  Thank you once more for the donation toward the sewing machine. They are very excited to learn how to use the sewing machine. They still have a little way to go before jumping on the machines, but I'm so happy that the machine will be there ready to use when the students are ready.

  Thank you so much for helping me bring resources into our costume design classroom. I am so proud of how much we have grown as a class, and now a department. The costume design class is becoming a huge success, and with the new sewing machine we are able to have more people working on the sewing machines at the same time to produce more projects. I wouldn't be able to do it alone, and I am so grateful to have a village that fully supports me and helps me out when I'm in need. Much love to our growing RHS community.”

• Sew What?! Sewing Supplies Needed for Costume Design Class.

  We are so happy for the hard cases to keep our sewing machines safe. The students are able to grab the machines when needed, and store them away when they're done. It has made set up and clean up much easier during our class time. Our costumes at 90% done for our upcoming musical.

  The students have also started to learn how to cross-stitch thanks to the materials donated. They are grasping the technique really fast. They have learned the basic stitches in cross-stitching, and many of them are moving on to learning how to follow a pattern of a design. They are learning very fast and I'm looking forward to them creating their own design patterns soon.

• Sew What?! Sewing Supplies Needed for Costume Design Class

  The new sewing materials have been so beneficial to our classroom. The students who did not have adequate sewing kits at their stations, now have full kits with all the tools necessary for our projects. Before, they were using old and used kits. They now also have an abundance of adequate tools like seam rippers and needle threaders -- that are used daily but break easily. It's no nice that our new sewers can have everything they need to be successful with our projects. Their faces lit up when they received their new kits.

  We have learned how to sew by hand using the basic hand stitches, and how to sew on buttons. We have learned how to make our own plushies, scrunchies, and skirts. We are now working on hemming techniques on the sewing machine we received from last year's Donors Choose project. I am so grateful for the opportunity to teach students these life skills. Thank you for making this dream come true.”

  My students were very excited when we received the items. The instantly started asking so many questions. They wanted to know how the items were going to be used, and how the costumes for specific characters for our musical will be. It has been exciting to introduce a new design class to our theater program at our school. As an arts educator I am always looking to expand my program, and adding another design class to our course offerings is a great way to grow the program.   Thank you so much for your donations to fund my latest project. We are very excited about the sewing machine and sewing materials. I have had many students inquiring how they can sign up to help me create costumes and enroll in my upcoming Costume Design class this Spring. This year, we will create costumes for "The Wiz" and are looking forward to using these resources to create awesome pieces for the stage. I couldn't have gotten this far without the support of you all. I look forward to sharing more photos of our costumes with you all.”

• Theater Class in Need of Tripods for Self-Recordings

  Thank you so much for helping us reach our goal. With the use of our new tripods we have been able to work on a couple of social awareness projects. We filmed a project for World AIDS Day, which was shared for our school community. And we are in the midst of filming an anti-bullying awareness project, which we aim to submit to the Shubert High School Virtual Theater Festival. Thank you for contributing to our virtual classroom this year; something as simple as being able to prop up our cell phones at eye level makes a world of difference when shooting our work. We are truly grateful for your kind donations.”
