My students love to sing and dance and show off their skills and we love to celebrate their success and talents in monthly school-wide assemblies and events throughout the year.
All research points to the fact that when students feel safe, connected and supported in their school, attendance rates increases and academic and social success can flourish.
For various reasons, many of my students struggle to come to school every day or on a consistent basis. Because of attendance issues and the lack of connection to school that results in their disjointed presence, academic and social success often lags.
With my project, I plan to focus on creating a new and improved school culture; one where success is recognized, talent is displayed and community is strengthened. This culture improvement plan will include monthly celebrations where student's academic, attendance and personal successes and growths are highlighted. The goal of this plan, which will be monitored monthly via reviewing attendance data, behavior infraction data and a cohort of grades, is to encourage students to not only come into school every day, but to find a reason to flourish.
Because our school does not have an auditorium, we use our expansive gym for a majority of our events. Our current sound system is archaic and does not work. Songs get muffled, voices don't project and fun often turns into disappointment and lost opportunity. Because our assemblies are a major component of our school community work, when the PA doesn't work, our goals fall flat and the impact of our efforts is not felt in the magnitude we aim for.
A new PA system will bring a tremendous amount of joy and excitement to my students and breathe much needed new life into our culture improvement plan and school attendance work.
