Southern California is notoriously affluent, but that is not the case for my students. They are a part of a highly migrant, latino and Asian community. For many of them, English is a second language and their true home lies over the border, in Mexico. My students have parents who, in most cases, never finished high school. Getting an education often takes a backseat role to helping care for siblings, family members and responsibilities at home. It isn't very often that my students just get to be kids and enjoy learning. That is why, as a school, we try to provide learning opportunities for students that are fun. We want to demonstrate to them that being smart isn't all about books, but it can be about creatively expressing yourself as well. I try to impress upon my students that writing, reading, drawing, mathematics, etc. are all art forms. I encourage them to unleash their creativity in any way that they can, so that they will be able to find their niche and make learning powerful.
