Slapping the Puck to the Back of the Net!
Funded Mar 27, 2018I would like to take a minute to again thank you for the hockey equipment. Students have been so excited to learn this new sport and be able to handle the equipment because in the past they had never seen it before. My students are learning different skills like how to properly hold the stick, where to place their hands, safety precautions, how to manipulate a large object and dribbling with the hockey stick. There was one specific student who struggled all year because she is extremely tiny and her muscles haven't fully formed properly with many O.T issues. I originally thought she would have a difficult time handling such a large piece of equipment but to my surprise she was actually one of the best in her class for manipulating the ball and dribbling. Everyday I tell her she may be a future USA Field-hockey star!
When the students first saw the equipment they were excited because it was things they have never seen before. Some students in the school were not even sure what the sport was called and how to use the hockey sticks. After introducing them to the sport via pictures, videos, and models they grew to love the sport and really increased their coordination and cardio-respiratory endurance.
Next year, with more time in the school year, I would like to extend the unit and use the scooter hockey equipment as well as a hockey puck. Unfortunately we did not have enough time to use the scooters and small hand-held hockey sticks. As for the current lesson, I would like to decrease the ball size to challenge some students more.
Once again, I am so grateful and happy to have received this equipment and I am sure my students are as well!”

Funded Mar 9, 2018I cannot begin to describe the happiness and excitement that this equipment has brought to my students. My Kindergarten and first graders are really enjoying the baseball equipment for the baseball unit. Besides this DonorsChoose project, I also received a very gracious donation of brand new baseball gloves from an outside source. At first I was using milk jugs that were cut in half to make scooping ground balls easier, but the students seem to really be thriving and enjoying using the baseball gloves. Students are learning manipulation skills and level swings with a strong force with the baseball bats, batting tees, tee toppers, and large bouncy practice balls.
When the packages first arrived at the school, some students saw me unwrapping and opening the equipment that we were receiving. They could not control their excitement and immediately ran over to me to see what new "toys" I had. Even now, with using the equipment outdoors, students are excited to learn to use the bats, how to throw, and field ground balls. They are constantly running up to me to say how much fun they are having and I have even noticed great development in their fine and gross motor skills.
After this unit concludes in a few short weeks, I will fee confident sending these students off to the next grade with increase coordination, strength, and knowledge. Before this unit, the school did not have a physical education teacher nor class, so students were never exposed to these different types of sports. Now, students are excited to take what they learned in school back home to show their older siblings and parents. They always tell me on the weekends they played baseball at the park.
This equipment have not only made my teaching experience easier but seeing the students eyes and faces light up really warms the heart.”
With gratitude,
