Clay is a unique medium in that when a child is given a hunk of clay they immediately begin to mold and shape the clay because the medium is so responsive to touch. Esteem comes, when maybe for the first time, a child becomes aware that they are in charge and have influence over the medium as it is quick to respond to their fingers. Clay, unlike a sheet of paper, is very forgiving of mistakes. Often mistakes are how we learn, and critical for self improvement - yet our children are so fearful of making mistakes. Clay once manipulated gives the students the confidence for expression and use of their imagination by allowing a child to learn to repair mistakes and therefore not be afraid to make them. Children learn that mistakes aren’t going to stop their progress of creating, learning, believing or succeeding through play.
