Teaching in a large urban district comes with its unique challenges. The families we serve rely on the public education system for more than the educational requirements set forth by the state and district. Students come through the door with a myriad of circumstances that can have an impact on their academic success and emotional well being. Our students rely on us for what we can offer them in terms of academic enrichment, social-emotional support, and sometimes the bare necessities of life. 6% of my students are in truancy danger for missing 15% of the school days so far. Also, 15% of my students have two Fs or more. Students can find difficulties in class and become disengaged, sometimes leading to adverse behaviors which can be disruptive to the learning process of other students. The CD players and headphones in the classroom will enable my students to listen to audio books and help them focus on their reading. Books like Homeboyz, Bronxwood, and Tears of a Tiger will allow my remedial readers to become deeply engaged with reading. Students will become lifelong readers if they can identify and connect with the text. Students will feel validated when they have access to books that they can see their world or themselves in. These high-interest books will foster a love or reading and allow students to feel accomplished. Studies indicate that students who feel accomplished are more likely to attend and tend to do better academically. The IPad will allow me to track the progress of the students as they progress in the various remedial programs.
