Everyone has sensory preferences, things that we do to keep us calm, focused and engaged in our day to day activities. But for many children with severe disabilities, regulating the senses can be difficult and greatly interfere with being able to engage with school activities. This looks different from child to child: the child may demonstrate sensory seeking behaviors, sensory avoidant behaviors, and/or sensory overload. Your support of this project will help to purchase items that allow our students to regulate their body so that they are ready to learn, laugh, and play at school! In our classroom, we have a "sensory area" where we offer tools and equipment that encourage self-regulation where we will add the items from our DonorsChoose.org project. Here is a brief overview of the benefits of our wishlist: The saucer chair and rocker chair provide flexible seating and movement while students are taking a break, or engaging in an activity. The tent provides a break from an overstimulating environment. Trampolines help children to understand and fully feel where their bodies are in space, and may also have calming effects for a child who is overly upset or angry. The oversized bean bag chair serves as a relaxation and positioning chair for students, as well as an alternative positioning seat for students who use wheelchairs. We hope, with your support, that we can provide our students with the tools to be calm, focused, engaged, and happy at school!
