Since most of my students come from low-income homes they often cannot afford many of the standard supplies and toys (we learn through play) we use in school. We share many items, but I find them having some designated as their own and having a way to separate and store them gives them confidence and comfort that is an essential motivator to learning. Learning to organize also has additional benefits. Many of my students are on the autism spectrum or suffer from cortical visual impairment. For these students, a busy work surface or classroom environment can distract and overwhelm them and adversely affect their progress, particularly during tabletop and circle time activities. By minimizing distractions from the class environment itself, they are more engaged during speech, occupational and physical therapy sessions. While my district provides materials for the curriculum they want us to teach, they often overlook how overcrowded our classrooms can get, particularly for those of us in special education who often work in small portable with no storage space. My students, unfortunately, due to their financial circumstances, already often live in overcrowded spaces. Please help us to both teach them how to organize and reduce visual overstimulation so they can be more successful. Thank you!
