Having a variety of book sets available for my reading classes will provide my students with the opportunities to both develop empathy for others, develop the habit of kindness, and also to discover that others are sometimes more like them than they think. This broad variety of books will ensure there is something for everyone who ever feels alone or misunderstood, from gay and trans students, to those isolated because of emotional issues, and also to those who possess no pride in their identities. I want my students to be better world citizens. Literature of all types can open up many different topics for discussion and mental digestion. Our students especially need to learn that they are part of society, even if they often feel outside of it. Books like The Giver force them to ask what a perfect society is. In Flight, a young man becomes other people, broadening his understanding and compassion. Authors like John Green create opportunities to discuss relationships, both family and outside it. My goal is to spend the next few years using these books to help students look beyond themselves and try to understand others' points of views, and develop their empathy for others. I have had amazing discussions based on books we have read, discussions they would not feel comfortable having with others. My job is to help learn more about themselves, and about others.
