Recent research suggests that for children with attention disorders, moving, spinning, and bouncing in their chairs correlated with better performance. I have tables in my classroom to allow for maximum student interaction, but the hard chairs do not suit the needs of my more fidgety students. By having chairs that are more comfortable, more mobile, I believe that the ability to remain on task and focused will multiply. Students that are happy, comfortable and engaged are better learners.
The new furniture, two Wobble Chairs and two bean bag chairs, will provide the students with a different option besides a hard chair. Many students also have attention problems, being able to move and change seating can eliminate the behavior issues that may arise. They can pull the chairs together as they are reading and discussing.
By allowing my students to choose seating that is specific to their needs, I am giving them the ability to choose what is best for them. Children are naturally different and diverse, and just like one-size education doesn't fit all, neither do chairs.
