"Books are a uniquely portable magic." -Stephen King. I fell in love with reading in the third grade, the first time I read Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. I loved the world, the adventures, the characters--I loved it all! This is my fifth year teaching fifth grade and I want my kiddos to fall in love with reading and the world of Harry Potter, too. Harry Potter is not only a great book because of the magic and fantasy, but also because it teaches friendship, perseverance, and acceptance. We will be dissecting these themes throughout the next few months by participating in Socratic Seminars, literature circles, and extending the world of Harry Potter into our science lessons. As my students learn about the magical world of Harry Potter they will gain a better understanding of their own world and the magic they are each capable of. "Hogwarts will always be there to welcome you home." Aside from the academic aspect, I believe Harry Potter teaches a sense of belonging. As our classroom is Harry Potter themed I want to experience the moment my students begin to understand the decorations in our classroom and begin to feel at home. My goal is that my students will find safety and comfort in Hogwarts and our classroom.
