This is the first time the library at this school has had a licensed librarian for years, and the collection has become extremely outdated. The books that we do have that are high interest are falling apart, and the average publication date of our books is about 20 years old. Many of our students struggle with reading, but they are excited when they find books that they are interested in. My goal for my first year here is to encourage students to find success in the library, but to do that I have to have books that will pull them in! I've been creating as many displays and literacy promotion programs as I can to get students excited about reading, but when the books are falling apart or are clearly really old, it send the message to the students that we don't place value on their materials. My hope is to be able to have a really fun Dr. Seuss theme in March, but all our Dr. Seuss books are falling apart! If I had a new collection of picture books for the younger kids, as well as some graphic novels for the older ones, it would do a lot to foster a positive experience for our students in the library. I am also working to bolster their technology skills, and a class set of headphones would really help them access audiobooks and other resources in a more meaningful way.
