  • Mrs. B's Buzzy Bees Socialize in a Classroom Community

    Funded Oct 2, 2019

My students were in awe when they saw the new carpet displayed on the floor, front and center. Many of them ran to the front of the room to get a closer look at the carpet. Their enthusiasm was contagious. When visitors came to our room, the carpet was shared immediately with the guest.

Each morning the class is involved with a Morning Meeting where everyone finds a place to stand on one of the carpet letters around the perimeter of the carpet. We share a good morning greeting with the person on our left and right. Then, we use think time to process an idea to share in answer to the sharing question. An example of a sharing question is, would you rather swim in the ocean or in the pool and why? Students share with a partner next to them. Finally, we share our answers with the whole group. Our departure cheer ends the meeting. We have used the carpet pictures for a literacy center activity. When we were completing an activity last week, a student could read the word, car. I asked her how she knew the word. She saw it on the picture label situated on the carpet.

Thank you so much for funding the carpet! It has been a great learning tool for our classroom. Many social conversations have occurred so far with many more to come.”

    With gratitude,

  • Phonics Fun With Friends

    Funded Mar 27, 2018

My Kindergarten students were elated to see the new games and activities received from Donors Choose. They were eager to select an activity and play with a friend(s). Favored activities, Pop and Match and Fishing for sight words, presented fun ways to learn and practice skills. The file folder games had spinners and bright colored, durable pieces for the students to play. Each game was self correcting at the end. Bubbling enthusiasm was the overall atmosphere in the classroom as students engaged with each other. They traded activities within the games to try other words. These new resources had an extremely positive impact on learning and engagement. Thank you Ripple for making this possible! It was a blast at the end of the school year!”

    With gratitude,

My Kindergarten students love to interact with their peers and have fun learning together. After literacy center work, they have the opportunity to select an activity to play with a friend. My students have varying abilities, but they learn well from each other. Most of my students have exceeded the learning level of my present activities so I want to engage them in some new, challenging opportunities and expand upon their learning. These materials will offer my students novel exciting games to further interest in learning while providing support for the building blocks for reading. For example, the Pop and Match Sound games afford students to pop a letter and use their letter sounds to make new words and sound them out. The element of surprise and the sound practice builds fluency with their reading of words. Kindergarten students love to move and interact with colorful engaging materials. The fishing for sight words game is a fun avenue for movement coordination skills and quick word recognition skills to build fluency in reading books. Word families games assist students in substituting letters and sounds to visually recognize similarities in words and how they belong together. These materials provide the repetition and practice students need to build foundational skills. They also learn to cooperate with each other, share and take turns, and problem solve. These are important life long learning skills.
