Imagine a classroom of millennial learners with no technology resources available. They love using technology or hearing stories being read to them while learning. This is a challenge to do as often that I would like with the time constraints. Their fond of reading will begin to elevate. It is needed to sometimes let a student receive a brain break from the struggles of reading alone. As the students are in their independent reading center it is difficult to know if the students are actually reading the books. When the students encounter difficulties this usually causes students to get off task because they do not have any support to help guide them. Having a listening center will help to make sure the students are truly engaging in the story. My students need a Listening Center because when they are working in their centers I want to guarantee that every student will truly receive the most valuable learning when working independently. The Listening center will ensure at every point of the ELA Block our classroom is growing readers. All students will have a chance to practice the skills of hearing fluent readers, tracking a person reading, vocabulary enhancement, and checking for comprehension. For example, the state assessment tests are administered on the computer so students sit and listen to the stories and questions being read to them. This is a great way to practice those skills to prepare. After reading, the students can listen to the story many times to ensure they have a clear understanding and will complete follow up graphic organizers. Remember that you need to hear things, not just see things, in order to learn well.
