No one student is the same, which is why differentiation in teaching is so important. Teaching to all modalities is what I strive to do everyday for my students.
Many of my students are kinesthetic learners, they learn by moving and doing! But, during some learning points in the day we ask these movers to stay in one place. Wobble stools target these learners and my kindergarten students with that extra energy.
Instead of students trying to focus on keeping their body still, they can move their body and focus on their learning.
Floor mats and an adjustable table have allowed my students to work at a lower table and on the floor which for some is the preferred way to learn. However, I want to introduce adding differentiated seating like wobble chairs and cushions to the classroom; these items can help provide an easier transition into the structured setting of school. Many of those students are coming from a daycare, preschool, or home where they could spend the day on the floor playing and moving however they want. Kindergarten is no longer just coloring, cutting, and playing. These students are asked to meet rigorous common core standards by the end of the year and I believe asking them to sit in a typical desk and chair is not the best option for all.
Differentiated seating will not only allow students to have a choice in where they learn, it can also be a great motivator! In order for children to have the choice where they learn, they need to become students, which means showing kindness, focusing on their work, and being responsible in their seating choices. I have already started the process using my own money by buying scoop rockers, children’s lap trays, play mats, and table risers.
I greatly appreciate any contribution, as all will make an impact for these young students!
