Moving and Grooving to Maintain our Focus!
Funded Mar 27, 2018Thank you for donating to our sensory room project! Up to 20 of our students need sensory breaks throughout their day in order to be calm and ready to learn. The sensory items we received through our Donor's Choose project have made a huge difference for several students of varying ages. When we first got the items in the mail, I had several students help carry and open the boxes. Their faces lit up and they couldn't wait to try all the new activities.
One of my students was especially excited for the Blue "star suit." He gets into it every day at least twice and stretches his body. It gives him the proprioceptive input that he needs so he doesn't crash and run into other kids in the classroom or hallway. Another student wears the weighted vest or the pressure vest depending on how he is feeling. He says it "helps me stay in my seat and do my work."
Kids have scheduled sensory breaks throughout the day, but the sensory room is also used as a "calm down zone." The colored light that changes colors is a calming item that the kids love. We turn down the lights and on the colored light and let an upset child calm down, sometimes using the weighted blanket as they sit.
These items have made a huge difference in our sensory room. We have one of the best sensory rooms in the valley now that we have these awesome items. Thank you to everyone who donated to this project, and please know that your donation is appreciated and being put to good use!”
With gratitude,
Ms. Turner
