My students are curious about the world around them. In language arts class, when a country of origin is part of the story being read, my students light up with excitement, recognition, and validation. They want to understand and be a part of the world at large as well as at a more local level. Many of my students have experiences across the globe. I want to enrich their knowledge of the country they now live in. Atlases will enable them to learn the name of their state capital, who the neighboring states are, where the mountains and rivers are located, and how it all connects to the world at large. Atlases helps us navigate where we have been, where we are, and where we someday hope to go. They help us understand the interdependence of natural resources, energy sources, climates, populations, and food distribution. My students want to find their mother country and connect it with their new home. They want their new home to become as familiar as their old. With these materials, my students will learn how to recognize their space and place in the world.
