Our school is currently working to provide a calming center for students to use to self regulate in a safe manner and environment. Research shows that calming centers provide a retreat for children to calm down, decrease physical behaviors, and help them to identify cognitive and physical changes. Calming centers may help students who overstimulate towards the end of the day, decrease student walk outs, help improve in areas of academics, and are recommended by the U.S. Department of Education. The variety of fidget and tactile materials needed will provide sensory stimulation and relaxation. Noise cancelling head phones will help tune out noise distractions. Room dividing curtains will help to create a sense of privacy while allowing appropriate level of supervision. Bean bag chairs provide comfortable seating and a sand timer will allow students to manage time spent in the center. Expectations on how to enter, use, and exit the calming center will be taught, modeled, and posted in the calming center. Strategies, activities, self reflection, and exit plans will also be modeled and taught in small group instruction with the counselor. With your generosity and contributions, we will be able to help students increase social emotional learning competencies to be more aware and in control of their emotions. We appreciate YOU making a difference in the social-emotional health of our children. Thank you for consideration in helping us meet the needs of our students.
