Having a variety of different musical instruments will allow students to HEAR where capital letters, commas, apostrophes, quotation marks, and end marks go within a sentence. Each instrument is assigned a task (capital letters=maracas, commas=cowbell, etc.), so while we are reading sentences, the students will play that specific instrument.
Please see the example below:
i would love to have musical instruments like cowbells maracas and tambourines to help with students writing and conventions
Students would read that sentence (above) and when the sentence needs a capital letter, they would shake the maraca for the lower case i, because it needs to be capitalized. Students would go through the rest of the sentence identifying where the mistakes are with their musical instruments.
My students are struggling with writing and conventions, and I feel by adding music to the classroom, it will help to cement these foundations in a fun and exciting way!
