My students work with ELA and Math i-Ready lessons and diagnostics on laptop computers, listen to stories on CD and have access to Epic! books online at our Reading Centers during our Reading Block. Far too frequently, however, their learning using these efficient technologies is interrupted or frustrating because the classroom headphones we currently have do not work consistently. When the headphones don't work, some students will exhibit undesirable behaviors fueled by their frustration, which causes an interruption to the learning of more students. In order to be able to use these technology resources that are designed for differentiating, headphones are essential. About half of my students are performing at one to two years below grade level, but the other half is on or above grade level. All of my students need to listen independently on these varied devices so that they will maximize their specifically designed and/or intuitive lessons. Customized, differentiated lessons are necessary for ELA and Math interventions to accelerate each student's learning. A classroom set of working headphones to use interchangeably with our available technology devices will surely promote student engagement and focus.
