My students struggle with spelling words correctly. Due to their hearing loss, they have difficulty "sounding out" words. We are continually working on spelling but even spelling "rules" are not accurate 100% of the time. In order to use a dictionary, it is necessary to already have a good idea of how the word is spelled before you can even find it. If each student had a Pocket Speller, they could use it as needed for independent spelling assistance. This would also be easier to manage since we have limited student computers in our classroom. Students could also take them to their mainstream classes for spelling assistance.
