This year, our focus in the classroom is to empower students through personalized learning. Not only do we want them to be able to choose what they learn, how they learn, but also to have the opportunity to choose the environment in which they learn. Flexible seating not only promotes better learning and options for students with diverse learning needs, but also creates an environment and space that feels less like a tradition classroom. Our students worked together to create a classroom design to meet these goals. Our classroom has become a home for students, but still needs improvements to make our students' vision a reality.
Our school, which is an urban school in a square-mile city, has felt the effects of budget cuts for years. There is no money in the budget to change the traditional classroom environment at the pace that education and student needs are changing. Our goal is to not only transform our classroom, but also transform how students view learning. At the beginning of the school year we allowed our students to design their perfect classroom. With our own money, we purchased a couch, some bean bag chairs, a coffee table and rug to create a space that felt warm and inviting. The students love it, and we want to give them more. We want to honor their ideas and create the learning environment that they have designed. In their design, students requested coffee shop style high top tables to sit or stand at, round tables for discussion and collaboration, and comfortable seating options. We hope that we will be able to give them the learning environment of their dreams.
