Today's generation of students are rarely found in their grandparent's shop playing with their pulleys or using a wheelbarrow to make the job of toting yard waste easier. Giving students the opportunity to explore and discover how simple machines actually make work easier helps to re-open these avenues of discovery. Building their own simple machines using 3D K'Nex building rods, students can actually test how much more weight can be lifted using two pulleys instead of one, or see how a water wheel can be used to power gears. Research shows that students have more success learning STEM subjects through hands-on activities than through just reading about the abstract concepts in textbooks. These K'nex kits will give that opportunity to our students for years to come. What I love most about these kits is that they are reusable from year to year and can be applied to multiple grade levels. I can build simple machines with 6th graders, geometry and molecular modeling with high schoolers and build cellular models with 7th graders.
