Building A Community Of Readers Through Author Studies!
Funded Feb 15, 2011Thank you so much for your tremendous generosity. Your donation has
made my classroom a much more print-rich environment. You have helped
put high-quality, thought-provoking books in the hands of my students,
and they have certainly fallen in love with them. My job has gotten a
lot easier now that I no longer have to scour the shelves of our public
library weekly, and my students feel like our own classroom library is a
treasure trove. I can't thank you enough for helping to expose my
students to the kind of stories that kids love to read and want to mimic
in their own experimental genre pieces. They now have the opportunity to engage in author studies that will allow them to see what motivates and inspires these authors. They have the opportunity to look at commonalities between texts and see themselves as authors. Thanks for providing my students with this great opportunity to study exemplary writers! You have been such a blessing
to our class. Best wishes!”

Making Movies... Making Learning Meaningful and Fun!
Funded Dec 31, 2010Thank you for donating a Flip camera and tripod to our classroom. My students are currently in the process of learning how to use this new technology, and they LOVE IT! The camera is so student friendly, and it allows them to upload videos effortlessly. We are working on writing fictional stories that will be published through digital storytelling within the next few weeks. The kids are so excited! They are always asking when we start filming. I can't wait to provide my students with this opportunity to mesh technology with writing in such a fun way. Thanks for providing this wonderful enrichment tool, and thank you for your generosity! ”

Navigating Nonfiction & Preparing Kids for Lifelong Reading!
Funded Jan 13, 2011Thank you, once again, for choosing to make a donation to my classroom. My students are completely captivated by the nonfiction books, and they are currently the most-read books in my classroom! High-quality nonfiction texts are so engaging and enriching, and through your generosity, you are helping my students to be more proficient readers of nonfiction text.
We are currently working on a unit on writing realistic fiction, but very shortly, we will be reading and writing biographies, thanks to your support. In addition, the kids are very excited about researching a famous person and embodying that person for a Wax Museum, where they will actually become a talking "sculpture". I am so excited to have the opportunity to make their research project engaging and fun, and truthfully, I couldn't have done it without your help. We are so grateful for the wonderful new books for our classroom! ”

Unlocking the Author's Craft One Book at a Time!
Funded Sep 16, 2010 Thanks to your benevolence and generosity, my students have nearly 50 more books in our classroom library to immerse themselves in. After just a few mini-lessons in Writer's Workshop, I can already see a huge difference in how they approach texts. They are no longer reading simply as readers. They are now reading as writers. They are looking at the use of punctuation more intently, focusing on colorful words, onomatopoeia, similes, great description and other literary elements with fierce intensity. These elements are slowly beginning to show up in their writing and trickle onto the pages of their writing notebooks. It is still so early, and we still have so many books to read!
I am absolutely ecstatic about the opportunity that you have all presented to me... to enhance my writing instruction by exposing my students to HIGH QUALITY books and examining the author's craft. I'm also excited to begin to delve more into reading comprehension strategies like prediction and synthesizing through the utilization of these same books. I know the students are excited to read and interact with so many beautiful and interesting books. They were awe-struck by the books from the second they laid eyes upon them. They are absolutely mesmerized and enchanted by the books YOU helped to purchase.
Once again, thank you for making such a selfless donation to our classroom. Your monetary gift will greatly impact my students for the rest of their lives. Thank you for helping me to pass the torch to my students and help them to fall in love with language. ”

Mrs. Nickerson
