Integrating all aspects of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, & Math) in a project for both 3rd and 4th graders isn't always an easy task. In this project, students will convert a bare hallway with windows overlooking the school garden into a bird watching museum area. Students will create an exhibit of native Kentucky birds and their specialized body parts (e.g., beak, talons, wing) to showcase their adapted structure and function. Students have used art materials, e.g., wire, clay, Paper-Mache, & recycled materials to create these parts. Students will use the bird watching books and poster to create questions and informational plaques for visitors. The poster will help students tally birds identified. This information will help everyone understand the importance of birds and gardens with the intention of protecting environments for native species. Having plastic feeders & bird seed & binoculars will enable students to see birds using their specialized structures in the real world up more closely. Having this new knowledge of the birds using their structures will then enable students to use the Strawbees Robotic Kits to engineer bird structure prototypes. The prototyping properties and low-cost building blocks (Straws and cardboard) make the product perfect for experiencing how structures and mechanical bodies of birds actually work in real life, and how to make engineering ideas actually work!!
