Reading should be an activity that brings a smile to a child’s face. When I was in a class that had a plethora of books on animals, what I noticed was an intrinsically motivated group of kids. They wanted to read for pure pleasure. I have noticed that classes that do not have lots of reading options and certain children don’t seem to love the process. If a student can decode words, read for comprehension and summarize what they have read, but do not like to read, then in my opinion, the student has been short-changed. Non-fiction is the hardest thing for my students. I am writing this grant in hopes of not only teaching kids to comprehend non-fiction, but to get them to love reading about real things in their world. One hundred percent of this grant will go towards getting non-fiction books.
