Funded Dec 2, 2023Thank you for your donation of art supplies. My students' faces light up with so much enthusiasm when they see new materials!
5th grade used the paint markers to color vivid tennis shoes as part of their self portraits this year. They also used the ink to create mostly abstract ink doodles on the watercolor paper, which prevented the ink from wrinkling the paper. 5th and 4th graders are participating in Sewing Club. They're using the felt and embroidery floss to create a stuffed creature of their own design. They've been working since Valentine's Day, and some students will finish this week. I will definitely have a sewing club again next year; the 4th grade students have already asked to participate.
Kindergarten used the dot styluses to create dot animals after a lesson on the Aboriginal people of Australia. First grade used the paper to create balloon animal watercolors in the style of Jeff Koons. And all the grades have used the waterboard painting set and been excited by the transient nature of the artwork!
My classes have been enjoying innovative projects this year because of your generosity. Thank you for providing them with extended opportunities!”
With gratitude,
Ms. Reid
It's Getting Hot in Here! Working With Glass in Elementary
Funded Feb 17, 2023Thank you so much for providing my students with a new experience. I worked with a small Art Camp group of 5th graders for safety reasons. They were so eager to start working with glass! They began by learning to score and break large pieces of glass. At first they were so tentative that I was breaking all the pieces as they scored it! Soon, they became more comfortable and created many many small pieces of glass.
After the students became adept at manipulating the glass, they engaged their creativity and went to work creating small pieces of art, from representational to abstract. I did show them the process of firing a piece in the kiln. They were interested, but couldn't wait to get back to designing and creating. All of the students wanted their fused glass pieces made into necklaces so they can show their hard work and ingenuity to their friends! I will enter some of the pieces in the district-wide art fair at the end of the year.
Several students asked if they could participate after the class began; I will have another fused glass art camp in the spring so more children can enjoy this experience. I will also continue to offer this class every year. It is so different from most students experience with Fine Art!
Thank you again for your generosity!”
With gratitude,
Ms. Reid
