My students are currently graded based on attaining specific standards (standards-based grading). They are given an opportunity each week to demonstrate an "Above and Beyond" knowledge of each standard by completing a project of their CHOICE. I really do believe in STUDENT CHOICE! They are given 9 (hopefully 10 including VR) options of different projects they can complete of their choosing. I believe that VR will benefit my students because of the immersive nature of the technology. Can you imagine EXPERIENCING a Civil War battle such as the PBS short film "By Brother's Keeper?" What about CREATING a virtual project using Tilt Brush? Even some of the games and apps on Steam offer up many exciting opportunities. Such amazing possibilities with this technology! Ultimately, my students are experiencing immersive technology OUTSIDE of school. One of my favorite quotes is, "If we don't compete, we won't compete!" Right now my school is not competing very well against the very exciting possibilities offered by video games, Snapchat (and additional social media), and many other technology-driven experiences. Virtual reality in my classroom will help me reach this generation and will hopefully begin to bridge the wide gap between immersive classroom technology and the current best practices of teaching.
