We need to embrace technology to make learning more engaging because when students are engaged and they are interested, that's where learning takes place.
First grade is such an important and exciting year integrating the use of technology throughout the day is a vital part of our learning. We would use iPads for student learning with STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) as well as literacy daily. In reading, each child will have books available at their "just right" level as well as books beyond their levels that can be read to them. In writing, each child will use the iPads to access facts to add to their non-fiction and realistic fiction writing. In math, each child will use the iPad to practice basic math facts and to use sequentially accelerating Engage NY (pilot year) to expand their math skills and knowledge.
Unfortunately, my classroom does not have technology for opportunities for students to engage in 21st Century skills independently or in a team situation. IPads in our first grade classroom would support much needed intervention and enrichment during center time.
Using technology in our classrooms not only engages students but is an amazing tool to build a foundation for STEM learning. Our students work with engineering curriculum to ask questions, explore, create models, evaluate, and explain their thinking. We are preparing our students for a technology-filled world as they get older and providing them opportunities to explore learning though various learning tools.
As you can see, the students love computer lab time. Unfortunately, we are only able to book the lab once or twice a month.
There is nothing like having an interactive learning tool right at your fingertips.
