The area my students struggle the hardest is with reading. The reason for this is a lack of resources both in and outside the classroom. While I can't provide at home materials, we can provide them with the tools they need inside the classroom. Audio books, listening devices, guided readers, and storage space for independent writing projects provide a variety of ways for my students to improve their literacy, a needed skill in today's competitive world. By donating to our Daily 5 project, we are providing my students with the tools they need to achieve grade-level literacy; an important milestone in the third-grade classroom. Daily 5 is a comprehensive instructional model for childhood literacy that allows for differentiation and provides consistency in the classroom. The variety of methods gives students daily opportunities to improve their reading, comprehension and writing. Listen to Reading through audiobooks on portable devices provides pronunciation and expression models that can only come from hearing fluent and expressive examples; students will have the accompanying book to follow along as they listen to the reading. Because of this, Listen to Reading is especially beneficial to our older struggling readers whose listening comprehension exceeds their reading level. The Read to Self segment utilizes cloth bags which students use to store their weekly book choices. By utilizing the cloth bags, students are not spending time every day choosing books from our library and are instead able to spend time building actual stamina. Additionally, in this segment, I would like to give students the option to read news in addition to fiction and informational text. Guided reading is small group reading instruction that provides differentiated instruction that supports students in developing reading proficiency.
