I use flexible seating in my classroom which gives students the power to choose where they do their best learning. Instruction is often given with students gathered in a central location, which is currently an old 5 ft x 7 ft rug. This rug is not large enough to seat all of my third graders, and I therefore have some students who are sitting on the fringes. Some students try to sit on low tables or stools near the rug, and that can create a sense of inequality between learners. By having a rug large enough to seat all of my students, I can maintain a sense of community and better engage all of my students.
