Fifth grade is a fun year as a reader! There are so many subjects the students are interested in and they love to share their reading with each other!
Today's students are not as interested in the classical literature when they are dealing with tough issues (parents that don't speak English, under-educated parents, parents working difficult shift work hours, after-effects of Hurricane Harvey recovery, etc). They crave light-hearted, fun reading that they understand and enjoy.
Any reading is good reading to a reading teacher! As long as we are reading, we are increasing our vocabulary, our reading stamina, and our exposure to new things. We open the world's door a little wider one book at a time and one success at a time.
