Our high school students know they need reading skills for "life after high school." But, they're still struggling to read fluently, to make sense of the written word. Modern, meaningful, "real" magazines featuring articles of importance and value to teens and young adults will make mastering new reading strategies easier. Built-in reading comprehension activities will make improvement evident to all.
Here's the best part: These magazines will go home "for keeps." Our magazines will become, for some students, the only reading materials in their household. That's powerful!
Everyone "wins." Students. Families. Siblings. Community.
In a world where functional literacy is an essential skill, this project will help equip young adults for life success. Magazines such as Scholastic ACTION (reading level 3-5) and CHOICES (level 6-10) will offer engaging, pertinent, and young-adult oriented news and other non-fiction articles in bite-sized chunks. Included teacher guides and comprehension activities will make it easy to extend the lesson and get the most out of it. After successfully completing the magazine, students will be able to take them home to re-read and to share with family members. The sense of "ownership" will be important to motivate these learners for continuing to develop reading and literacy skills.
Similarly, the two text sets (reading level 3-6 and 6-8 will be used in the classroom during reading focus time. Again, accessible, high-interest modern materials can make a difference in motivating reluctant readers to engage the printed word. We are learning six key reading strategies in our program- strategies that good readers use unconsciously, but which challenged readers need to apply consciously. It will be exciting to have a variety of new materials to use to practice and hone these new literacy skills!
