I teach in a large urban middle school in Oregon. We celebrate a wide range of students and cultures with 33 languages and 30 countries represented by our student body. We also are plagued with a high poverty rate; over 80% of our students receive free or reduced lunch. It is hard for parents to put food on their tables at home, let alone find the time and resources to provide quality literature to these budding readers and writers. It is hard for kids to see the value of learning when their home-lives are riddled with big problems: How can I get my homework done when there is no quiet space to work? When will I get my next meal? I wish I had a warmer coat.
My hope is that through reading and writing engaging, thought-provoking literature, my students will develop a love of these crafts. They will take their reading and writing ability and their knowledge of effective language usage with them to do great things.
