My students are new language learners and need rich literacy experiences such as shared reading to model fluency and encourage them to read for pleasure. My students love it when they are read to aloud. They like big books and predictable text, especially since they know I will provide the opportunity to engage with the text independently. I usually borrow big books from other teacher's because I do not have many big books in the classroom. My books are outdated, dusty and stained yellow with age. Even though my students still enjoy the story lines, I feel like they can and should be offered more.
