  • Big Books Make a Big Difference

    Funded Dec 22, 2017

Thank you again for your generosity. When I received the package, it arrived a few days after New Year's, many of my students interpreted this event as a late Christmas gift. I opened up the packages in front of my class and they were equally as joyous as I was to find these great treasures. We have been using many of the books to reinforce sight word practice and specific phonic sounds. My students love to take special pointers and read the text with a reading buddy. There are multiple ways these books having enhanced classroom literacy instruction. Some of my students who are hesitant writers were quick to write a text response after being read to aloud. The moments my students are writing a readers response is enclosed in the photos attached. In addition, my students love reading the big books along with me, especially repetitive text. This instructional practice helps students understand syntax in English and builds important language skills for my students. I wish I was able to share how many students are reading compared to the data I had in the beginning of the year. I hope I have worked hard enough this year to bring and instill a love for reading for my first graders. I am thankful for your financial gratuity and for lending a helping hand in making my literacy mission possible.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Ali

My students are new language learners and need rich literacy experiences such as shared reading to model fluency and encourage them to read for pleasure. My students love it when they are read to aloud. They like big books and predictable text, especially since they know I will provide the opportunity to engage with the text independently. I usually borrow big books from other teacher's because I do not have many big books in the classroom. My books are outdated, dusty and stained yellow with age. Even though my students still enjoy the story lines, I feel like they can and should be offered more.
